Paintball grenade launchers seen in Skyball 5 VHS

Zap Skyball has become a landmark event, by taking over the Toronto Skydome for one weekend each spring, packed with paintball action.

For 2002, Zap stocked the stadium with a crew of professional camera operators and cameras. This gave them the ability to show the game action from the finals on the stadium’s Jumbotron screen.

The VHS tape of the event has a short introduction with views from the tournament trade show and then jumps right to the action of the Skyball 2002 finals games. Before each game, the players are brought out and announced to the crowd through an archway filled with smoke and flashing lights.

Because of the live multi-camera switching used to produce the video, the tape has a feel that is very similar to a live television broadcast of a traditional sporting event, something that is very new to the sport of paintball.

All of the cameras are on the outside of the netting which is at some point a distraction as seams or zip ties come into the picture, but the games are able to progress in real-time, playing out just as they did at the tournament, something that is rare in paintball videos.

Also included in the program are lists of the competing teams and highlights of teams preparing for play in the staging area.
